Model UC concentric CP coupon Pipeline Integrity: A Case Study in Using Sensor Arrays Three years ago, Electrochemical Devices, Inc. (EDI) was approached by a major pipeline company to cooperatively develop a corrosion monitoring system for its new pipeline. The pipeline would be located beneath city streets and embedded in Controlled Density Fill. The fll is cement-based and therefore has a high pH. Its porosity could allow chlorides from road salts to reach the pipeline. We developed a Sensor Array with our Model UC concentric CP coupon as the key component. The Model UC allows current-on potential measurements to be made with virtually no voltage drop error. For this application, two electrical resistance (ER) probes were used. One ER probe was connected to the structure to monitor corrosion loss, the other functioned as a free corrosion sensor. The Sensor Array was mounted on a plate with band clamps sized to keep it securely positioned on the pipe during the fll operation. The concentric CP coupon had an internal zinc reference electrode and corrugated ER probes tube containing backfll leading back to the test station for making potential measurements. Installation sites were located in a high traffc area. A corrugated tube leading to the Sensor Array allowed potential measurements to be made from the at-grade test station. Sensor Arrays can be confgured to meet site requirements. One or two Model UC concentric CP coupons with or without internal zinc reference electrodes can be used. Additionally, one or two ER probes, a four-pin resistivity probe, corrugated tubing containing backfll for surface measurements from grade or other sensors are options. A Sensor Array was designed for a gas distribution company that had dynamic stray current problems. It had one Model UC concentric CP coupon with a zinc reference electrode and one ER sensor.
