59 NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 55, NO. 12 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE DECEMBER 2016 Your Association in Action Michelle Lau presented information about the NACE IMPACT study during MOGSEC 2016. Attendees visited the NACE booth to learn about NACE programs and services. N ACE International East Asia & Pacific Area (EAPA) Director Michelle Lau gave a presentation on the NACE IMPACT Study during the Malaysian Oil & Gas Services Council (MOGSEC) conference held September 28 to 30, 2016, at the Kuala Lumpur Conven- tion Centre. The event, attended primarily by oil and gas service providers, showcased the latest technologies, equipment, and ma- chinery in the field. IMPACT (the Interna- tional Measures of Prevention, Application, and Economics of Corrosion Technologies) is a two-year global study released in 2016 that examines the current role of corrosion management in industry and government in establishing best practices. Lau shared key findings of the study, focusing specifi- NACE has Presence at Malaysia Oil & Gas Services Council Conference cally on the Asia Pacific region. She detailed the procedures on reducing the cost of cor- rosion by using the Corrosion Management System and financial tools detailed in IMPACT. She said the study is "evergreen," with continuous updates of new findings, case studies, benchmarking, and other tools of value to corrosion professionals worldwide. The full IMPACT report and other resources are available at impact. nace.org. In addition to meeting with MOGSEC leaders, Lau spent time in the NACE booth after her presentation to meet with attend- ees and answer questions. Many of the con- ference's 6,000 attendees were not aware of NACE and its presence in Malaysia and the EAPA. NACE representatives were there to discuss corrosion prevention and mitiga- tion and to provide information on the association's comprehensive education, training, and certification programs; con- ferences; industry standards; and publica- tions. This enlightened many of the participants. In Memoriam F lorian Mansfeld, FNACE, longtime NACE International member and Fellow, passed away on October 12, 2016. At the time of his death, Mansfield was professor emeri- tus, Department of Materials Science, University of Southern California. He had been a professor in that department for 28 years, including nine years as department chair- man. Mansfeld received his B.S. degree in physics (1960) and his M.S. degree (1964) and Ph.D. (1967) in physical chemistry from the University of Munich, Germany, and completed a post-doctoral appointment with H.H. Uhlig at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mansfeld received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to corrosion science, including the Alexander von Humboldt Awards (1979 and 1983); the ASTM Sam Tour Award (1984); the NACE International Whitney (1988) and H.H. Uhlig Awards (2002); and the Electrochemical Society Vittorio de Nora Award (2006). He was selected as a NACE International Fellow in 1994 and Fellow of The Electrochemical Society in 1995.
