62 MARCH 2017 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 56, NO. 3 folks who have passed their CP1 exam need some time in the f ield to develop their sk ills" says Adam Johnston, director of technical ser v ices. "We help them do that in a safe and structured learning env ironment." Today, 50 years after the Bass's estab- lished the company, the Bass team is brimming with talent. Bass engineers and technicians are certif ied by NACE Inter- national, more than 10% of the Bass staff are NACE-certif ied CP instructors, and multiple Bass personnel serve as local NACE section off icers. This expertise— coupled with a dedication to advancing the applied science of CP, company- owned and maintained equipment that minimizes reliance on third-party con- tractors, and industry-leading project management staff—has grown Bass into a national f irm that has developed cre- ative solutions for a number of corrosion- related issues. The TRITON ® triple-coupon test sta- tion is just one of Bass' innovative solu- tions. Winner of an MP Corrosion Innova- tion of the Year Award, the TRITON was the f irst coupon test station on the market to offer technically sound alter- nating current (AC) and direct current coupons incorporated with a stationary reference electrode, all in an integrated package that's easy to install and main- tain in any location. SPOTLIGHT On NACE International Corporate Members O ver the last several years, Bass Engineering (Long v iew, Texas) has delivered cathodic protection (CP) ser- v ices across the United States, as well as in Canada, Spain, United A rab Emirates, South Korea, and the Cay man Islands— but it didn't always have an international reach. In 1967, founders Calv in and Lillian Bass started the company to prov ide CP engineering ser v ices in the oil f ields of East Texas and the surround- ing area. Ever y year since then, Bass has grow n in corrosion control expertise, ser v ices offered, and geographic reach. Clay Brelsford, Bass president, says a key reason for that growth is the com - pany's unwavering commitment to devel- oping employees with CP expertise. "I first learned about cathodic protection by working with Calvin and Lillian part-time while I was in high school and college," he says. "We intentionally focus on keeping that tradition of apprenticeship and first- hand learning alive at Bass." In 1981, after earning a degree in electrical engineering, Brelsford joined Bass full-time and worked in a technical role for eight years before becoming vice president, opera- tions in 1987 and president in 2005. Under Brelsford and the leaders before him, the Bass team has consis- tently included some of the most sk illed CP engineers, technicians, and installa- tion specialists in the countr y. One reason for this is Bass' Field Specialist program, which prov ides hands-on train- ing for new corrosion technicians. "Even SPOTLIGHT ON NACE INTERNATIONAL SILVER CORPORATE MEMBER BASS ENGINEERING Bass Engineering Celebrates 50 Years of Cathodic Protection Service Bass has also developed industry- leading guidance for the engineered design and installation of induced AC and lightning mitigation systems, which it often presents at CP industry conferences like the NACE Rocky Mountain Short Course and the University of Ok lahoma Corrosion Control Short Course. "It's part of who we are," says Jordan Groody, direc- tor of business development and a NACE- certif ied CP1 instructor. "The people we hire are driven to innovate and to teach." But Bass isn't all business. Fifty years of grow th have meant 50 years of giving back to the community. The company supports continuing corrosion control education by serving on the advisory board for the K ilgore College corrosion technolog y program and funding a NACE Foundation scholarship to support aspir r - ing corrosion control professionals. Employees also participate in Habitat for Humanity events and volunteer at local animal shelters. Most recently, Bass employees organized a relief program for Baton Rouge f lood victims, which resulted in more than $12,000 of dona- tions and 1,000 lb (454 kg) of relief supplies.
