28 APRIL 2017 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 56, NO. 4 volatile organic compounds. One example of its application can be seen in its use by China's Jiangsu Toppen Science & Tech- nolog y Co., which is using the resin to help protect the first kilometer section of a 23-km (14.3-m) chemical pipeline struc- ture. Biofilm Detection and Control Program The new ClearPoint biofilm detection and control program from global specialty chemicals producer Solenis (Wilmington, Delaware) helps identify and prevent bio- film growth in cooling water systems. According to J. Chris Farrell, director of global customer equipment and services at the company, biofilm is a major threat to the performance and stability of indus- trial cooling systems. It is estimated that 20% of corrosion comes from microbial sources, leading to pitting, deposit forma- tion, and premature repair and replace- ment of plant equipment. To address this, however, the new program aims to pro- mote improved heat transfer perfor- mance, lower water usage, and reduced corrosion and equipment damage. It was developed specifically for industrial cus- tomers with extensive and complex cool- ing systems. The program merges equip- ment, chemistry, and service into one integrated solution that detects the early onset of biofilm and intelligently doses the right mix of chemistries to help remove it. New Line of Marine Control Systems The marine solutions business of GE Power Conversion (Paris, France) intro- duced SeaLyte as its latest technolog y for vessel control and dynamic positioning systems. The new solution complements the company's existing SeaStream solu- tions, offering a structured and standard- ized package to better serve customers with smaller vessels for offshore support and merchant markets. SeaLyte provides an intuitive touch screen with high-reso- lution graphics, which can be used with third-party systems to assist with mainte- nance. Reduced hardware embedded in the system brings reduced complexity, leading to lower expenses and enabling a cost-effective solution for customers. SeaLyte comprises two standalone prod- ucts: the SeaLyte vessel control system and SeaLyte DP. Both can be fully inte- grated into one package or used indepen- dently with third-party technologies, pro- viding f lexibility to accommodate and integrate with existing or pre-selected subsystems on vessels. Extra Protection Added to Corrosion-Inhibiting Coating Cortec's VpCI-368 coating is now more powerful with extra vapor-phase corro- sion inhibitors. The coating protects metal substrates exposed to harsh out- door conditions, with an extensive record of use for the mothballing and layup of equipment, protection of shipments, and preservation of spares. The coating is also available for application in complex, sealed spaces where a greater concentra- tion of vapor inhibitor is beneficial. An extra dose of the vapor phase corrosion inhibitor (VpCI ® ) vaporizes from the coat- ing, fills the enclosed space, and adsorbs on difficult-to-reach surfaces. This is helpful on applications such as pipe inter- nals, where it is challenging to thoroughly cover all substrates.
