MAY 2017 VOL. 56, NO. 5 IN THIS ISSUE CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WORLDWIDE MATERIALS PERFORMANCE Inspection and monitoring technology available today is making it much more efficient to spot degradation and corrosion. In recent years, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, for surveillance operations to help detect signs of corrosion has surged in popularity across many industries, led by oil and gas and others prone to corrosive deterioration. This technology is a game-changer for industry, in that various inspection and detection instruments can now be attached to a drone and flown into places that were previously very difficult or dangerous to access. Several projects where companies are using UAVs to inspect for corrosion are discussed in the feature article that starts on p. 28. Additionally, various nonintrusive corrosion monitoring techniques—such as ultrasonic testing, fiber-optic sensors, and electric field mapping— are reviewed in the technical article on p. 52.
