18 NOVEMBER 2017 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 56, NO. 11 MATERIAL MATTERS Continued f rom page 17 initial failure. The cost for the entire proj- ect, ranging from the investigation to the f inal repairs, was $15 million, according to WisDOT. To this point, the bridge has held up as designed. But Abu-Yosef hopes other jurisdictions will learn from the Leo Frigo Bridge case, or similar failures could easily be repeated elsewhere. "These jurisdictions have a good record of the soil prof ile and characteris- tics," he says. "After the failure, [WisDOT] went back to their database and identi- f ied other bridges with similar soil condi- tions, so they went back and evaluated corrosion risk at those locations." "But do other jurisdictions have the time and resources to do this? Going for- ward, we need to be making sure that new bridges are designed properly to mitigate the corrosion of piles and that protective coatings can withstand the installation process without damage," Abu-Yosef says.
