NOVEMBER 2017 VOL. 56, NO. 11 IN THIS ISSUE CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WORLDWIDE MATERIALS PERFORMANCE The Nanpu Bridge, which opened to traffic in 1991, crosses the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China and is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world with a total length of 8,346 m and a main span of 423 m. The bridge's distinctive 7,500-m spiral-shaped approach is a world-renown feature. A leading factor in the degradation of bridges is corrosion, which poses a growing threat as bridge infrastructure continues to age and maintenance and repair spending is postponed. In this issue, the 75th Anniversary MP Classic technical article on p. 34 describes the results of laboratory and on-site tests of sodium chloride (NaCl) removal from concrete surrounding reinforcing steel in bridge decks. An evaluation of organofunctional silanes, which are increasingly used to protect concrete bridge decks against chloride ingress, is presented in the technical article on p. 52. In Material Matters, an article on the Leo Frigo Bridge in Wisconsin explains the corrosion mechanisms that contributed to the sagging bridge deck. On p. 80, the Corrosion Basics article provides information on impressed current cathodic protection for atmospherically exposed reinforced concrete structures.
