AUGUST 2018 VOL. 57, NO. 8 IN THIS ISSUE CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WORLDWIDE MATERIALS PERFORMANCE A riser pipe on an offshore oil rig connects to the seabed wellhead equipment. Infrastructure and assets in a marine atmosphere are exposed to corrosive conditions that include fine particles of sea salt that are carried in a mist by the wind as well as splashed and sprayed from the surface of the sea. These salt particles contain chlorides that settle on metallic surfaces and cause them to corrode. This month's issue of Materials Performance focuses on protecting metals from corrosion in marine environments. Developing corrosion control programs and services to meet increasing demand from the maritime industry is a priority for NACE International. To bring corrosion into the forefront of this industry's mindset, NACE is partnering with leading maritime-related organizations to provide insight into problems and challenges the industry is currently facing.
