OCTOBER 2018 WWW.MATERIALSPERFORMANCE.COM 32 ENERG Y M A RK E T S A ND S OURCE S T RENDS There has been a sea-change in the oil and gas production industry in the United States. The United States will soon be the largest energy-producing nation and a net energy exporter. Nontraditional energy sources in the shale market have revolutionized energy production in the United States, and more changes will come with public and governmental pressures for increasingly green energy. Changes to energy markets and sources of production require new infrastructure; for example, the United States currently has approxi- mately 2.7 million miles (4.3 million km) of pipelines that transport oil and natural gas. The majority of these pipelines were designed and built to trans- port from traditional production areas to consumers. New fuels such as bio- fuels and renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric have an increasing role. These will be part of the U.S. energy infrastructure and have unique corrosion control needs. COM MUNIC AT IONS/EL EC T R ONIC S T RENDS Costs of communications and electronics are decreasing. This has led to changes such as widespread use of cellular phones and remote monitoring of equipment. Consumer tie-ins will offer huge returns to scale discounts on Note: Petroleum is petroleum products excluding biofuels; biofuels are included in renewables.
