19 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE: VOL. 58, NO. 6 JUNE 2019 Sustainable Liquid Coating System for Anticorrosion Applications Advanced materials and specialty chemi- cals company Solvay (Brussels, Belgium), formulated a new waterborne Halar ECTFE coating system that offers corro- sion prevention for a wide variety of sub- strates. ECTFE, or ethylene chlorotrif luo- roethylene, is a proprietary material that provides chemical resistance in heav y- duty industrial applications, such as chemical processing. Consisting of a high- adhesion primer and topcoat, this coating system can be applied using standard liq- uid spray equipment. Its versatility enables a wider range of end-use applica- tions than would be possible with powder coatings. This range of applications includes complex shapes, uneven sur- faces, oversized vessels, pipe interiors, tanks, and containers. Halar ECTFE is a viable metal coating alternative to corro- sion-resistant alloys and presents excep- tional chemical and permeation resis- tance, surface properties, adhesion, and high purity. Whether used with or without the primer, this liquid coating can be applied in a range of thicknesses to metal, gas, masonry, polymers, and wood sub- strates. The product also demonstrates exceptional resistance to strong acids and bases (pH 1-14) and is also not affected by solvents up to 302 °F (150 °C). Antimicrobial, Antifungal Technology for ABS, PC, and PP Resins Global polymer company Lotte Advanced Materials USA, Inc. (La Palma, California, USA) has introduced Evermoin, a non- silver antimicrobial and antifungal solu- tion for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), and polypropyl- ene (PP) resins. According to the company, this technology "offers 'built-in-the- polymer' protection" against healthcare- associated infections (HAI). Evermoin can help combat HAIs, which are a persistent problem in healthcare environments and affect about one out of every 25 patients daily. Tested to inhibit 99.9 (3 log) growth rate of positive and negative pathogens, Lotte's antimicrobial technology offers fast-acting protection against the spread and growth of pathogens and fungi on medical housings, equipment, and acces- sories. In addition to medical applications, Evermoin can also be used in commercial industries, such as cosmetics, electrical and electronics, appliances, and kitchen- ware.
