34 JUNE 2016 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 55, NO. 6 resistivity conditions local to a pipeline or other metal structure in contact with soil must be estimated reliably. These numbers also tell a lot about soil ion content. In addition, the degree of moisture-wetting in soils should be understood, and virtually no soil condition should be considered to be completely dry. Many other study results identify the aggressiveness of chloride ions in the exter- nal corrosion of steel. Any time salinity is found in soils, chloride ions will be detri- mental to steel structures. Study of regional geologic publications may lead to better anode bed design and installation.
