Teevens reiterated his 39 years of experience and the need to engineer and custom design monitoring systems and not completely rely on vendors' products to fit all applications. Questions were raised regarding the orientation of corrosion monitoring devices in LPG or LNG lines where the known and measured water contents are extremely low. The answer was that ER probes or sensors in truly dry gas systems would function best not as "corrosion" monitors but rather as "erosion" monitors. Questions were raised on the use of 12 o'clock entry of ladder coupons to mea- sure corrosion at the bottom-of-the-line corrosion activity. Teevens stated that it was less than desirable to use such an approach and that it was worth the invest- ment to install bottom inserted flush coupons and/or electronic sensors. With respect to known corrosion- prone areas or CPAs and the deployment of sensible monitoring at those locations, the queries raised were aimed at the use or nonuse of Type B welded repair sleeves on internal degradation. The answers were directed to the problem of hydrogen ion reduction to nascent hydrogen and the subsequent build-up of pressure within the annular space of the pipeline outer diame- ter and the Type B sleeve inner diameter. Sufficient pictorial examples were pro- vided to back up a definitive stand that this practice should be prohibited by the opera- tors and OISD. Concluding Remarks In conclusion, there was amicable agreement regarding the requirement of deploying properly placed equipment in locations confirmed by historical past problems and/or ICPM. There was a growing appreciation for the extent to which the OISD will be closely auditing its systems into the future. The goal of the session was to create awareness regarding technology development in the field of cor- rosion. People from various organizations, including SNGPL, Applus Velosi, MAS Associates, Inspectest, Punjab University, and the University of Engineering & Tech- nology Lahore, participated in the event. The speakers were Aleequr Rehman Hanif, Cathodic Protection (CP) Specialist; and Ahmed Kawad Khan, dy. chief engi- neer (corr) at SNGPL. They presented their experiences on the application of CP sys- tems, narratives, conflicts, best engineer- ing practices, and alternating current interference on transmission pipelines. Liaqat Raza, section trustee and found- ing chair of the Islamabad Pakistan Section, appreciated the efforts of the sec- tion and Corrosion Control Department at Speaker Aleequr Rehman presented at an April technical section conducted by the NACE Islamabad Pakistan Section.
