"DICK" STRATFULL was an early pioneer in controlling the corrosion of steel in concrete. From 1947 until 1978, he supervised the Corrosion Research Sec- tion at the California Department of Trans- portation. In 1957, he wrote a seminal article in CORROSION, "The Corrosion of Steel in a Reinforced Concrete Bridge." For many, that paper introduced the con- cept of concrete as an electrolyte and also measuring the corrosion potential of rebar as a corrosion evaluation technique. He first applied CP of steel in concrete as a test in 1959 and in a full-scale application to a bridge deck on the Sly Park Bridge in 1972. He received the U.S. Transportation Research Board's 1974 K.B Woods Award for the paper he wrote discussing the Sly Park CP system and a discussion of making contour maps from measurements of rebar corrosion potentials on the concrete sur- face. Stratfull also received the 1982 Frank Newman Speller Award from NACE Inter- national. He took the lead in establishing Corrosion Engineering (CE) as a licensed field in the State of California and held the first CE license California issued. The NACE Western Area Richard F. Stratfull Award for service to the area was dedi- cated in his honor.
