58 DECEMBER 2016 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 55, NO. 12 NACE NEWS Williamson, "as our strategic plan has con- tinued to be challenged and optimized by the Board of Directors and now encom- passes the areas of product and service diversification, member engagement, pub- lic policy, operational excellence, and board sustainability. These initiatives will ensure that NACE continues to grow in the right direction." NACE Chief Executive Officer Robert H. Chalker noted that the organization is mak- ing a difference in over 100 countries. "The initiatives we planted as small seeds over the last several years have started to blos- som. For example four years ago, we decided to invest heavily in education and certification programs to make sure they remain the premiere programs serving our members and industries. We are now seeing these initiatives being implemented around the world. We also recognized the impor- tant impact government officials have on our industry and the members we serve, so we decided to establish organized outreach programs to policy makers and regulators. We are working hard in countries such as the Middle East, China, Canada, Australia, United States, and even beginning to look at Europe. As part of this initiative we are partnering with other organizations that have common agendas. We now have sev- eral examples where NACE members and staff, working together, are having a posi- tive influence on the decisions these offi- cials make." NACE Vice President Samir Degan noted that NACE International's recently released corrosion study—International Measures of Prevention, Application, and Economics of Corrosion Technologies (IMPACT)—has found that the cost of cor- rosion worldwide is over US$2.5 trillion. "We at NACE International believe that at least 15 to 35% of this cost can be saved by using available practices and technologies in our routine working environments. Fur- ther costs can be reduced by incorporating corrosion prevention technologies and practices in the design stage of the asset. The IMPACT study also emphasizes the necessity of incorporating corrosion man- agement systems in all organizations as a standard practice to maximize the benefits of reducing costs due to corrosion." The NIGIS India IMPACT study was launched at CORCON 2016, with attendees participating in focus groups to take a survey on corro- sion management practices in their organi- zation and discuss local corrosion issues. Spread over four days, CORCON 2016 featured six plenary lectures; 19 invited talks; 188 technical papers in 14 symposia, including a poster session and two student symposia; and six interactive technical forums along with an innovative event, "Jung se Jung," jointly organized with GAIL. Topics of the interactive forums included, "Delivering Performance through Optimum Coating Specifications," "Water Treatment," "Water Transmission Pipelines, "Corrosion in Concrete," "Regulations and Standards in Corrosion," and "Corrosion in Refinery and Petrochemicals." The prime event during CORCON 2016 was the presentation of the 22 nd Annual Corrosion Awareness Awards. The winners were: Excellence in Corrosion Science and Technology in Research and Education, Bharat Bhushan Jha, CSIR—Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneshwar ; Excellence in Corrosion Science and Technology in Oil and Gas, Shailesh D.
