Smar t III John Smar t Consulting Engineer Sandy Williamson NACE International President, 2016-2017 It has been my pleasure to serve as your president for the 2016-2017 term. It was an enlightening year, complete with groundbreaking activities and continued growth. When I joined NACE International back in the early 1980s, the association was essentially U.S.-centric. Today nearly 50% of our 36,000 members live and work outside the United States. I have been gratified to travel worldwide with fellow officers and members to attend conferences and meetings, enable new agreements and partnerships, and gain insights into the needs of our current, diverse membership. Although my core experience as a corrosion engineer is in the oil and gas sector—the industry on which our association was based nearly 75 years ago—we are making significant strides to become active in other markets that include maritime, mining, water and waste water, and others, further ref lecting the depth and scope of our growing association. Keeping pace with this growth are our education, training, and certification pro- grams. Within this past year we negotiated and signed partner agreements with the Chinese Petroleum Society and ABR ACO in Brazil to enable more courses in those countries. Efforts to expand into additional countries are continuing. In addition, the first two modules of the online Industrial Coating Applicator course have been com- pleted, expanding our offerings of convenient web-based training worldwide. A major global highlight of the year was the release of the 2016 IMPACT Study, a vital resource to help us achieve our goals and educate management, governments, and the general public about the critical need for corrosion management programs. IMPACT—the International Measures of Prevention, Application, and Economics of Corrosion Technol- ogies—reveals that the global cost of corrosion is an astounding US$2.5 trillion, and that from 10 to 35% of this cost can be reduced by implementing currently available corrosion control practices. The study goes beyond the economic effects of corrosion, however, by emphasizing how to integrate corrosion technology with organizational management systems. I highly recommend that you review this groundbreaking report and use it as a resource within your organization and to educate others on the importance of the NACE mission of protecting people, assets, and the environment from corrosion. IMPACT and its associated resources are open to the general public at impact.nace.org. NACE is now embarking on the next phase of the IMPACT project by developing a robust online portal for companies to rate their corrosion management systems, im- prove operations by employing best practices, and access hundreds of resources to en- rich and increase the success of their corrosion mitigation programs. The new IMPACT Portal is scheduled for release next fall. Finally, I would like to touch base on the progress of the NACE Strategic Plan. The Board of Directors developed a five-year strategic plan encompassing the areas of Product and Service Diversification, Member Engagement, Public Policy, Operational Excellence, and Board Sustainability. These initiatives will ensure that NACE continues to grow in the right direction. I am pleased to announce a new monthly feature in MP effective this issue that describes the strategic planning process, our goals and progress, and how you can become involved. See p. 64 for the first installment. These are just a sampling of some of the many activities conducted by NACE mem- bers and staff that are furthering our mission and worldwide reach. My wife Karen and I sincerely thank you for your generous hospitality this year—it has been an honor serv- ing you. We warmly welcome incoming President Samir Degan and First Lady Shalini as we continue to expand this great organization. Outgoing President's Message
