Smar t III John Smar t Consulting Engineer VIEWPOINT Incoming President's Message It is my pleasure to greet you as president of NACE International for the term 2017-2018. This is an exciting time for NACE as we look to explore new horizons. Our growth trajectory has two important pillars; the first is growing our business in global markets and the second is our focus on reaching and effectively serving today's corrosion control professionals. The accom- plishments and growth of the past by our member-driven organization has paved the way to a successful future, and I am honored to be part of this tremendous journey for the past 22 years and for the next year as your president. The future certainly holds challenges, but embedded in the challenges are opportunities— of changing markets, new technologies, and member needs. NACE will use strateg y and exper- tise to make inroads into new areas and build strong programs for a competitive advantage where we hold leadership. Over the past few months I have engaged with our CEO, Bob Chalker, and the leadership teams, and today I assure you that our Strategic Plan has emerged as a result of adequate challenge by the board. The plan has been optimized in the areas of Product and Service Diversification, Member Engagement, Public Policy, Operational Excellence, and Board Sustainability. These key initiatives are now being worked on throughout our organization, to ensure that our association continues to grow and more importantly provide thoughtful leadership, an important priority for me as your president. I feel passionately about leadership, and I am talking about leadership at all levels. The NACE initiative on The Leadership Training Program for members teaches new skills and encourages the pursuit of leadership roles within the association as well as corrosion control professionals. I also believe that leadership should not be confined to boardrooms but must be expressed within the association and in the many corrosion jobs conducted by our profession- als. It must include and impact our youngest members to fuel their professional growth. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to highlight a resource available to all of us—the International Measures of Prevention, Application, and Economics of Corrosion Technologies (IMPACT) study, released during CORROSION 2016. It is a vital resource to help us achieve our goals and educate management, governments, and the general public about the critical need for corrosion management programs. The IMPACT study reveals that the global cost of corrosion is an astounding US$2.5 trillion, and that from 10 to 35% of this cost can be reduced by implementing currently available corrosion control practices. The study goes beyond the economic effects of corrosion, however, by emphasizing how to integrate corrosion technolog y with organizational management systems. By doing this, corrosion decisions are optimized with respect to both cost savings and concern for safety and the environment. IMPACT and its associated resources are open to the general public at impact.nace.org. And stay tuned for exciting new developments related to IMPACT designed to support and strengthen corrosion management programs in every industry and location. In leading NACE as your president I would like each of us to hold ourselves accountable for the following values that I think will make NACE a truly great organization: 1) Demonstrate integrity 2) Value diversity 3) Be collaborative 4) Show mutual respect, especially in conf lict resolution These values I believe are key to our ability to break new ground and work together to achieve the triumphs that await us. I have all of you to thank for your trust as I embark on my new position following CORROSION 2017. I will ask for and depend on you for ideas, support, and counsel in the coming 12 months. It is my privilege to serve each and every one of you. Samir Degan NACE International President, 2017-2018 Samir Degan NACE International President, 2017-2018
