APRIL 2017 VOL. 56, NO. 4 IN THIS ISSUE CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WORLDWIDE MATERIALS PERFORMANCE A tanker ship is moored at an offshore oil platform at sunset. Corrosion control on offshore structures is necessary to sustain oil and gas production, provide safe working and living areas, and avoid potential harm to the environment. In this issue of MP, which focuses on corrosion of offshore structures in the oil and gas industry, several technical articles address cathodic protection (CP) of offshore platforms. The article on p. 34 describes the finite element method used to model CP systems and determine the optimum CP design for a marine platform jacket. The optimization of a CP system retrofit using boundary element method software is the focus of the article on p. 56. In the Material Matters article on p. 14, details on how a computer model simulates the physics of galvanic corrosion for a floating production storage and offloading vessel are discussed. This issue also looks at management of corrosion risk. On p. 30, the special Roundtable feature provides views from several NACE International members on risk-based inspection for controlling pipeline corrosion. Corrosion management and cost optimization are explored as well in the article on p. 61. In NACE News, look for the second article on NACE's Strategic Plan on p. 66.
