47 NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 56, NO. 8 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE AUGUST 2017 Continued on page 49 that big done that quick," Lockwood ex- plains. "e purchasing unit had trouble getting the amount of grit and garnet that we needed." But they managed by sourcing various suppliers nearby. In total, they con- sumed 1,000 tons (907 metric tons) of the coal slag, 100 tons (91 metric tons) of the garnet, and more than 5,000 gal (19 m 3 ) of coatings. Before the M/V Kaleetan could pull out of port, the shipyard had to return the wir- ing back to its previous configuration and complete tests. "We'd find a stray cable somewhere that got nicked," Lockwood ex- plains. e 20-person electrical crew had to replace wiring, put panels back, and com- plete troubleshooting, "making sure every system was ready to go on Day 92," he continues. Even up to the last day, the crew was on the ferry replacing stickers, safety signage, and deck markings. But after all that work, after 92 days and more than 200,000 ft 2 (18,580 m 2 ) of coated surfaces, Fairhaven Shipyard was able to cast off on time. Hope- fully this was just the start to smooth sail- ing for the M/V Kaleetan. is article, by S.M. NACE Members Tapped to Lead New ISO Subcommittee on Protective Coatings e International Organization for Stan- dardization (ISO) committee TC 35, "Paints and varnishes," recently approved a new subcommittee, ISO/TC 35/SC 15, "Protec- tive coatings; concrete surface preparation and coating application." is committee was initiated by NACE International mem- bers participating in the ANSI accredited U.S. TAG (Technical Advisory Group) to ISO TC 35. TAG members identified concrete coating and preparation as a gap in the ISO work program and agreed that NACE would be in a strong position to bring needed leadership to this area. In addition to proposing an initial work program for the new subcommittee, NACE applied for and was granted the Secretariat for the committee on behalf of ANSI, the of- ficial U.S. member of ISO. As the Secretar- iat, NACE has the responsibility to nomi- nate a chair for the committee and proposed NACE member Mike MeLampy. MeLampy has shown strong leadership in numerous NACE committees and activi- ties and he is also participating in several ISO committees. He has experience in help- ing committees to develop documents through the standards consensus process, which has resulted in documents used by industry. Also, in support of this new effort, NACE member Steve Poncio agreed to accept the chair position of the NACE U.S. TAG to the DeFelsko Corporation l Ogdensburg, New York USA Tel: +1-315-393-4450 l Email: techsale@defelsko.com LPD 1-800-448-3835 www.defelsko.com Low voltage Pinhole Detector Detects holidays, pinholes and other discontinuities on metal and concrete substrates n Lightweight, ergonomic design to fit comfortably in the hand with a balanced weight distribution n 4 voltage outputs conform to international standards n Automatic self-test verifies voltage calibration n G roundSense™ visibly reassures the user that the instrument i s properly grounded n Weatherproof, dustproof and shockproof — meet s or exceeds IP65 n Long For m Certificat e of Calibrat ion included S elect from 2 Kit options: Basic — includes everything needed for detecting pinholes using a rectangular sponge wand C omplet e — includes t he Basic Kit , adapt able sponge hardware and extension accessories Complete Kit NEW NEW
