Smar t III John Smar t Consulting Engineer T hanks to the foresight of our 11 founding fathers and dedication of thousands of members, volun- teers, sponsors, and staff over the years, NACE International will soon be embarking upon its 75th anniversary, a milestone for the organization as well as the corrosion control industry. NACE's history took root during the summer of 1943, when several individuals involved with the Cathodic Section of the Petroleum Industry Electric Association discussed the value of forming a separate association dedicated specifically to cor- rosion and its control. At a meeting held on October 10 and 11, 1943 at the Humble Building in Houston, Texas, the 11 attend- ees concluded a separate association was desirable, and went on to create the National Association of Corrosion Engi- neers (N.A.C.E.). From its beginning as a small group of engineers focused on cathodic protection to address metal pipeline degradation, NACE International (as renamed in 1993) has evolved into a worldwide organization involved in every industry and area of cor- rosion prevention and control—from chemical processing and water systems to transportation and infrastructure protec- tion. Today, NACE is the world's largest corrosion association, with more than 36,000 members from 140 countries. Along with NACE, the corrosion con- trol industry has evolved, too. To under- score the advances made in corrosion pro- tection and mitigation over the last 75 years, MP will take our readers on a jour- ney back in time. Starting with this issue, we will feature a classic technical article each month from the MP archives that highlights technical knowledge and engi- neering practices of the past. This will cul- minate with a special 13th keepsake issue of MP that covers NACE's 75th anniversary and the top technological advancements over the past 75 years. Additionally, start- ing next month and continuing through August 2018, we will highlight portions of NACE's history in each issue. To bring the anniversary celebration to a close, MP will publish a futurist issue in October 2018 that will take a look at what may be down the road in terms of corrosion control technolog y and services. The historic expedition starts on p. 12 with a View point by NACE Past President W. Brian Holtsbaum on his career and per- sonal experiences during his 60 years as a NACE member. It continues with an over- view of NACE's past 75 years by MP Man- aging Editor-in-Chief Gretchen Jacobson. Many interesting facts are presented here, including the story behind the launch of MP magazine (which started out as Materials Protection). The trip continues on p. 30 with the classic technical article from November 1994, "Factors Affecting the Accuracy of Reference Electrodes," by Frank J. Ansuini and James R. Dimond. We look forward to our excursion down memory lane, and invite you to partici- pate. If there is an MP article you believe should be remembered as a classic, please email the specifics to me. We just may add it to our itinerary! Kathy Riggs Larsen Editor kathy.larsen@nace.org Celebrating 75 Years in the Corrosion Control Industry
