Your Association in Action 71 NACE INTERNATIONAL: VOL. 56, NO. 11 MATERIALS PERFORMANCE NOVEMBER 2017 NACE Volunteers in the Crowd J osé Caprarulo, a NACE International-certified Coating In- spector Program ( CIP) Level 2 Coating Inspector, Cathodic Protection (CP) Tester, and Corrosion Technician/Technol- ogist, has been a NACE member for 14 years as well as a NACE volunteer for three years. Caprarulo became involved with NACE as a volunteer while he was looking for an interesting and recipro- cal cooperation opportunity in a large institution, such as NACE. Caprarulo says he has been enriched by volunteering with NACE and being able to meet people from various cultures with specific knowledge and skills, which is reflected in his daily work. All NACE volunteer projects that involve meeting people are very important to him. He believes it is interesting to bring together prominent people from different countries who hold several NACE certifications for exchanging experiences and knowledge. "Having participated in two workshops, it is clear that NACE is looking for experienced people all over the world to create something like an 'experience data bank' to improve itself," Caprarulo says. "On the other hand," he notes, "NACE gave me the opportunity to meet other technicians from other countries as well as NACE´s instructors and management people, who strongly enriched my professional knowledge and skills." Through NACE's career development testimonial program, Caprarulo volunteered to share his NACE training and certifica- tion experience with industry, which was featured in an adver- tisement published in the September 2017 issue of Road & Bridges magazine. He states in the ad, "I've worked for 35 years as an inspector in the oil and gas industry—inspecting pressure vessels, hydrocarbon storage tanks, pipes, and pipelines. It would be impossible to imagine my career without the imprint of NACE. When I was designing my career, I always found some course and certification that gave more validity and recognition." Another recent volunteer event for him was the CIP Item Matching workshop held at NACE's Houston, Texas, USA head- quarters in late July 2017. The task was to standardize examina- tions worldwide by developing "blueprints" for items that were identified and discussed by all participants. Volunteer: José Caprarulo Employer: GIE SA, Mar del Plata, Argentina Professional Role in Corrosion: Working as a senior integrity advisor in the oil and gas industry. Corrosion, and its different mechanisms, is one of the main focuses to prevent failures. Caprarulo also volunteered to join the Emerging Leaders Alliance (ELA) Conference Selection Committee. The ELA Con- ference is a partnership among leading engineering, research, and science-based organizations that provides high-quality lead- ership training. NACE joined the ELA to offer young profession- als within NACE valuable training, which will promote the development of great leaders to guide the corrosion industry, and sponsors ELA Conference registrations for young profes- sionals who are chosen to attend the conference.
