OCTOBER 2017 VOL. 56, NO. 10 IN THIS ISSUE CORROSION PREVENTION AND CONTROL WORLDWIDE MATERIALS PERFORMANCE Petroleum refining and chemical processing provide the base for a variety of products in addition to fuels, such as pharmaceuticals, building materials, and electronics. These plants can operate at high temperature and pressure levels and experience exposure to aggressive feedstocks. This combination of factors makes these sites particularly vulnerable to a variety of corrosion-causing scenarios. The technical article on p. 44 summarizes the results of an investigation into the source of organochloride compounds that contaminated a refinery's naphtha hydrotreater unit and led to tube corrosion. In the Material Matters article on p. 14, a new refinery safety order finalized by California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health, aims to reduce the risk of major incidents at the state's oil refineries. This order requires a damage mechanism review of equipment that can be affected by material degradation such as corrosion. Additionally, on p. 17, an article describes a tungsten carbide coating applied by chemical vapor deposition that is highly chemical resistant and protects metals against aggressive substances. More information about the performance of various materials in chemical environments is presented in the Corrosion Basics article on p. 68.
