He was 68 years old. Scantlebury was a larger-than-life character, who left an indelible mark on all those who met him.He was born on October 23, 1943 in Penzance, Corn- wall. He attended Downing College, Cambridge and graduated in 1965 in natural sciences and metallurgy. His contemporaries in corrosion included John Sykes, Chris Page, José Galvele, Eamonn Kinsella, Steve Turgoose, Bob Cottis, and Robin Procter, while his undergraduate director of studies was T.P. "Sam" Hoar. He would have been taught by (or met) those that were then famous, WZ JMKIUM NIUW][ QV \PM KWZZW[QWV ÅMTL including Cottrell, Hoar, Evans, Davies, Ralph, Kelly, Chilton, and in particular, Jack Mayne, who supervised his Ph.D. on "The Mechanism of Conduction in Pigmented Polymer Membranes," which began his lifelong passion for paints. Scantlebury joined Portsmouth Poly- technic as a lecturer in 1970 before his move to the Corrosion and Protection Centre at UMIST in 1974. Through the ensuing years he developed what be- came a world-renowned research group in protective organic coatings. He was promoted to a personal chair in Corro- sion Science and Engineering in 2006 and continued to be actively involved in teaching and research to this present year. In 2007 he received the U.R. Ev- ans award of the Institute of Corrosion for research excellence. In 2001 he was awarded the UMIST Millennium Prize for excellence in teaching. Scantlebury's research interests in paints and organic coatings extended to cathodic protection, corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete, marine cor- rosion, and the development of calcare- W][ ÅTU[ 0M XQWVMMZML VW^MT \WWT[ NWZ measuring interfacial properties between coatings and substrates including the ac- curate measurement of adhesion using the "blow-off" method. He undertook sabbatical leave at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He was a keynote speaker at many confer- ences, memorably twice for the Libyan Corrosion Society and three times at the Australasian Corrosion Association Congresses. In 1989, he established the quinquennial Christ's College conference series on "Advances in Corrosion Protec- tion by Organic Coatings." The 2014 event, which he was planning before he died, will go ahead in his memory. Scantlebury's long illness was docu- mented throughout the years on the "D6 News" blog (now sadly unavailable) that had been his communication link from UMIST to past students and others who knew about it. Although he was rallying and planning to return to lecturing in November, unfortunately this was not to be. He leaves us all missing him terribly. He is survived by his wife Ilma and children, Michael, Liz, and Andrew. (—Stuart Lyon) NACE International, Vol. 51, No. 11
