CHEMICAL TREATMENT
formance shown by terpolymer may be attributed to strong interaction and/or adsorption of terpolymer with Fe2
O3 particles. Summary
This study has shown that: z The Fe2
O3
z Polymers containing non-ionic and cationic functional groups are inef- fective Fe2
increases with increasing polymer concentration and polymer contact time with Fe2
O3
z Natural additives (i.e., FA, TA, ALG) show poor to mediocre per- formance as Fe2
O3
z Biopolymer (carboxymethyl inulin) performance increases with increas- ing carboxylation.
O3
z A bipolymer containing a high car- boxyl group performs similarly to synthetic homopolymers of acrylic acid and maleic acid.
z Among the various natural (LS) and synthetic polymers tested, polymers containing sulfonic acid groups show the best performance as Fe2
O3 dispersants.
z Terpolymer exhibits excellent per- formance in terms of particle size reduction of Fe2

ZAHID AMJAD is a visiting professor, Div. of Mathematics and Sciences, Walsh University, 2020 E. Maple St., N. Canton, Ohio 44720. He has worked in research and development for more than 30 years, developing new proprietary antiscalants and dispersants for industrial water systems including boiler, cooling, desalination, oil field, and home care applications. He has taught undergraduate and graduate-level chemistry courses. He has edited six books on various aspects of water treatment; presented papers at national and international conferences including NACE, IWC, AWT, ACS, and others; and has published more than 150 journal articles. A NACE member since 1985, Amjad received the AWT Technologist of the Year Ray Baum Memorial Award and has organized technical symposia for NACE and ACS conferences.
DOMINIQUE GUYTON is a student in the Div. of Mathematics and Sciences, Walsh University. He is working toward B.S. degrees in AYA integrated science education and biology, with a chemistry minor. He plans to eventually obtain a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.
