A The information you seek is available from most coating manufacturers' catalogs; usually there's a table in the catalog that states which materials are good for specifc applications. When you go to the specifc material data sheet, it will tell you the required surface preparation and coating thickness. You can also purchase reference books from NACE International. A I am afraid there is little generalization in corrosion protection coating systems. Those in the industry do have certain basic standards that specify coating systems for most commonly experienced corrosion conditions. But in most cases, these basic standards do get adjusted for specifc sites depending on the prevailing and anticipated environmental conditions and the user expectancy of corrosion protection service life. Another point to consider while designing corrosion protective coating sys- NACE International, Vol. 52, No. 5 tems is that corrosion protection is never achieved by the use of one single type of coating or by one single coat of whatever gets used. Corrosion protection comes from using more than one type of coating, with different layers in the coating system providing specifc attributes to corrosion protection. The most important aspects of corrosion protection come from the surface preparation of the substrate. A poor or inadequate surface can lower the performance of even the best protective coating system. NACE International, as well as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), do provide examples of coatings and coating systems along with suggested surface preparation under given environmental conditions with expected service life to frst maintenance. A Information is available from the paint manufacturers. Most manufacturers also supply software containing data sheets and e-mail addresses, allowing you to ask them par- ticular questions. They usually will supply the required specifcation. NACE and SSPC also supply information regarding specifcations. In Europe, ISO 12499 has quite good information in various sections that relates to coating life and required preparation. A Software information can mislead a person to select materials that are not suitable for the specific job. There is no general coating system that will be applicable to all situations. Copying someone's specifcation will lead to misapplication of a product, which can be a costly mistake. A Not to worry. The general nature of the information is somewhat helpful, but the application of that information takes more than cursory knowledge.
