NACE News Your Association in Action Andresen Elected to the National Academy of Engineering N ACE International Fellow Peter Andresen has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), an honor that is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Andresen, a principal scientist, ceramics and metallurgy, at the GE Global Research Center's Corrosion and Electrochemistry Laboratory (Schenectady, New York), was recognized for prediction and prevention of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in nuclear materials. According to the NAE, "Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, signifcant contributions to the engineering literature, and to the pioneering of new and developing felds of technology, making major advancements in traditional felds of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education." Andresen's expertise is in the area of corrosion and environmental effects on mechanical properties and integrity of materials. His research has focused on corrosion NACE International, Vol. 52, No. 5 and environmental fracture of iron- and nickel-base alloys under conditions of interest to the energy industries. He built the largest and most sophisticated laboratory in the world for studying environmental effects in nuclear systems, especially related to SCC and corrosion fatigue. This involves over 60 high-temperature water systems, including 42 systems complete with individual water chemistry, autoclave, computer-controlled loading, direct current potential drop crack monitoring, and related instrumentation— systems that have been copied in a number of universities and national laboratories throughout the world, including University of Michigan, Pacifc NW National Lab, Idaho National Lab, MIT, Tohoku University, Institute for Metals Research, and Shanghai JaioTong University. Andresen is a co-inventor of NobleChem™, an electrocatalytic technology that was implemented in all U.S. boiling water reactors in 2012. This process creates a uniform distribution of 1 to 5-nm Pt particles on all wetted surfaces in a simple process that can be done during full power operation. He has been highly involved in evaluating the effects of dissolved H2 and Zn on SCC in pressurized water designed to mitigate SCC. Andresen has served in many capacities in professional societies, including on the NACE Board of Directors and Corrosion Board of Editors, chair of the NACE Research Committee and Awards Committee, and member of the Advisory Panel for the Halden Test Reactor in Norway and the Idaho National Lab Science User Facility. He has worked with dozens of laboratories throughout the world to help establish and improve their capabilities.
